Facilities & resources:

Library

The over twenty thousand volume library's particular strengths are in Dedham and area genealogy, especially local history. In addition to standard genealogical and historical reference materials, the Society has extensive manuscript holdings, Dedham church and civic records from 1635, Dedham newspapers dating from 1796, and an outstanding 18th to 20th century map collection.

Archives

In the archives of the Dedham Historical Society you will find manuscripts, diaries, town records, scrapbooks, photographs, and maps, as well as military and association collections.
Here is a partial selection of our holdings.

Library hours are Tuesday - Friday 12-4 p.m and even dated Saturdays from 1-4 p.m, admission is $5 (free for members). If you need manuscript materials it’s best to visit when our librarian is available (Tuesday or Thursday).

Genealogy:

The Dedham Historical Society has what is considered the third best historical and genealogical library in New England. Genealogies include books, many I.G.I. fische, and original family manuscripts. View a partial list of genealogical resources.

Genealogical Research Services

The Dedham Historical Society is a private, non-profit organization, and has one of the finest historical and genealogical libraries in the country. Because our genealogical resources are so important, many serious researchers come here to learn of important historical persons, events and ancestral history and lineage.

Our library staff is made up of professionals and volunteers. Their primary objective is to keep the library in fine operating condition and to help people who visit us. We do have volunteers who can provide a moderate amount of research for a prepaid fee of $20 for the first hour ($20 for each additional hour) and $5.00 for 8 ½ x 11" photocopies and US postage and handling costs.

The fee is nonrefundable, and research results are not guaranteed. Timing of responses are based on the availability of the researchers and the number of inquiries being handled.

Send specific questions and related background information you have, such as family charts, historical dates, book titles used, etc., so our volunteers can send you the best possible answer.
